What is cab-to-axle on a Ford chassis cab?
Cab-to-axle (CA) is the distance in inches from the back of the cab to the centerline of the rear axle. It is the dimension a truck body is sized to. Ford publishes CA alongside wheelbase for every chassis cab, written as wheelbase/CA — a 169/84 F-350 has a 169-inch wheelbase and 84 inches of cab-to-axle.
What cab-to-axle do I need for my body length?
Across Ford's published body applications, the most common cab-to-axle for a dry freight van body is 84″ at 12 feet and 120″ at 16 feet. At 20 feet, 144″, 150″ and 156″ are listed equally often; at 24 feet it is 168″ and 186″. Each length has a working range — a 16-foot van body appears on chassis from 108″ to 150″ CA — because cab style and after-frame shift the usable window. The matcher below returns the exact CA for every qualifying chassis instead of a rule of thumb.
Do I need a CDL to drive an F-650 or F-750?
In the United States a Class B CDL is generally required to operate a single vehicle rated over 26,000 lb GVWR. An F-650 ordered at 26,000 lb sits right at the line; at 29,000 lb it is over it, and every F-750 is over it. Ford's F-600 tops out at 22,000 lb, which is why it is often spec'd as the largest non-CDL work truck. Confirm licensing with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission for your specific build and use.
How much payload is left after the body goes on?
Subtract the body from the chassis payload. Ford's typical body weights: an 8-foot stake body is about 1,815 lb, a 12-foot stake 2,275 lb, a 16-foot van body 2,305 lb and a 24-foot van body 3,360 lb. The best-case F-550 that takes a 16-foot van body is rated at 12,570 lb maximum payload, which leaves about 10,265 lb for crew and cargo once the body is on.
What's the difference between SRW and DRW?
SRW is single rear wheel, DRW is dual rear wheel. Duals raise the rear axle rating and therefore GVWR and payload, and they widen the track for a more stable body platform. On an F-350 chassis cab, going from SRW to DRW takes GVWR from 10,500–11,500 lb to a flat 14,000 lb, and maximum payload from 4,120–4,970 lb up to 6,280–7,940 lb.
Which Ford is right for a dump body?
Ford lists dump bodies on the F-350 through F-750, and always on a dual-rear-wheel chassis. An 8-foot dump goes on 145/60, 168/60 or 180/60. A 9-foot dump adds 182/72 and the medium duty options from 158/84 up. A 10-foot dump starts at 158/84 and runs out to 212/102. Contractor dumps most often land on an F-550 or F-600 at 169/84, pairing an 18,000–22,000 lb GVWR with a 10-foot body.
The two numbers that decide everything
Why cab-to-axle decides the truck, not the cab
Why cab-to-axle decides the truck, not the cab
Most people shopping a work truck start with the cab and the engine. Upfitters start at the other end: the body has a length, that length needs a specific cab-to-axle, and CA is what narrows the order down to a handful of build codes.
Get CA wrong and the body either hangs too far past the rear axle — which pulls weight off the front and makes the truck steer badly — or it doesn't clear the cab. Neither is fixable after the truck is built.
Every number on this page comes from Ford's Body Application Guide. Ford publishes it by model year; the chassis dimensions and body matching in it carry across years, so treat this as the working reference and confirm the specific model year with us before you order.

Typical weights for an average body of each type. Stake bodies include a metal floor, bulkhead, stake racks and a D.O.T. bumper. Van bodies include interior plywood lining, a roll-up rear door and a D.O.T. bumper. Confirm actual weight with your final-stage manufacturer.
Curb-to-curb and wall-to-wall diameters in feet. Wall-to-wall accounts for mirrors and body overhang — use it when you're spec'ing for a tight yard, a parking deck or an alley route.

Tom's Ford delivers completed commercial trucks to any state in the continental US. Spec the chassis here, we order it and coordinate the body through Ford-authorized upfitters, and the finished truck goes on a transporter to your yard. You get the same build codes, the same upfit coordination and the same commercial desk whether you're twenty minutes away in Monmouth County or two thousand miles out.
Transport cost depends on distance and how the truck is carried. Titling and registration follow the rules of your home state, and we'll walk you through what your state needs before anything is ordered. Ask the commercial desk for a delivered price and we'll quote the truck and the transport together.
Where's the plow chart?
There isn't one — and that's the correct answer, not an omission. Ford's Body Application Guide matches bodies to chassis, and a body is sized by cab-to-axle. A snow plow hangs off the front bumper. It has no cab-to-axle dimension, so it never appears in the body charts.
The word “plow” appears once in the whole 37-page guide. On its intake page, in the list of questions to ask a commercial customer: “Are you adding any other equipment? (e.g. snowplow, crane, liftgate)”
The closest the charts come is a general note on the Super Duty chassis cab pages. On the F-450, F-550 and F-600 charts it reads: “Consider ordering the optional Heavy Duty or Extra Heavy Duty Front Suspension Package for applications with heavy, permanently front-mounted equipment.” The F-350 chart carries the same advice without the word “permanently,” and adds a reminder to review FMVSS requirements for units at or under 10,000 lb GVWR. The F-250/F-350 pickup chart has no such note at all.
So the tool above will spec the truck under your plow — the stake, dump or utility body it also has to carry. What follows is what actually governs the plow itself.
Where the real plow numbers live
- Ford order guide — whether Snow Plow Prep is available on your cab, drive and engine combination, and what it costs.
- Body Builder's Layout Book — front axle ratings, frame section and mounting dimensions for the model year you're ordering.
- Your plow manufacturer's fit guide — the minimum front GAWR that plow needs, by truck model.
- The door jamb sticker — on a truck already built, the Safety Compliance Certification Label gives you the actual front and rear GAWR.
We pull all four when we quote a plow truck. Ask and we'll send the relevant pages for your build.
What decides whether a truck can plow
- Front GAWR, not payload
- A plow loads the front axle, so the limit is front Gross Axle Weight Rating — a separate number from GVWR. A truck with payload to spare can still be over its front axle with a heavy plow hung on it.
- Plow weight counts against payload too
- Mounted plow and hardware are part of the finished vehicle weight, so subtract them from what's left for your body and cargo. Enter the plow in Added equipment in the payload check above and it carries through the whole calculation.
- Snow Plow Prep Package
- Ford's factory prep adds computer-selected front springs for plow service and a heavier alternator — 190, 250 or 410 amp depending on engine — plus a rapid-heat supplemental cab heater on diesels. It is prep only; the plow is not included. Ford has listed it as optional on 4x4 pickups and not combinable with the Tremor Off-Road or Heavy-Service Front Suspension packages. Source: Ford's Super Duty upfit page, not the Body Application Guide. Availability moves by model year — confirm against the current order guide before you spec it.
- Ballast and the rear axle
- Weight on the nose unloads the rear axle. A plow truck usually needs rear ballast to steer and stop properly, and that ballast is more payload spent.
- The upfitter has the final say
- Plow manufacturers publish their own vehicle-fit lists with minimum front GAWR by model. That list, not this page, is what approves a specific plow on a specific truck.
Everything in this panel comes from Ford's order guide, the Body Builder's Layout Book and plow manufacturers — not from the Body Application Guide, which does not cover front-mounted equipment.
Spreaders too: a cubic yard of coarse dry salt is 1,215 lb and coarse wet sand is 3,240 lb — both in the cargo weight reference above. A 2-yard sander loaded with wet sand is over 6,000 lb before the truck moves.

Is there an interactive version of Ford's Body Application Guide?
Ford publishes the Body Application Guide as a PDF — a grid of checkmarks you read by hand, cross-referencing body type against wheelbase and cab-to-axle across dozens of pages. This page is the Ford Body Application Guide Tool — that guide rebuilt as a tool: pick the body type and length you need and it returns every Ford chassis that takes it, with wheelbase, cab-to-axle, after frame, GVWR, maximum payload and the body order code. 378 chassis configurations and 792 body-to-chassis matches, each citing the guide page it came from, plus a payload check that accounts for the body, your equipment, cargo and crew. Tom's Ford built it for our own commercial desk and left it open because it is more useful public than filed away.
What does CA mean on a Ford chassis cab?
CA is cab-to-axle: the distance in inches from the back of the cab to the centerline of the rear axle. It is the dimension a body is sized to. Ford writes it alongside wheelbase — a 169/84 chassis has a 169-inch wheelbase and 84 inches of cab-to-axle. In Ford's guide a 12-foot stake body appears on chassis from 80 to 120 inches of CA, most commonly 84; a 20-foot van body spans 144 to 168 inches.
What wheelbase do I need for a 16-foot body?
For a 16-foot dry freight van body, Ford lists 40 chassis configurations, from the E-350 cutaway at a 176-inch wheelbase up to the F-650 at 260 inches. Cab-to-axle runs from 108 to 150 inches, and 120 inches is the most common. Common choices are an F-450 or F-550 at 193/108 or 205/120, or an F-650 at 212/138. The matcher returns all of them with payload for each.
Do I need a CDL to drive an F-650 or F-750?
A Class B CDL is generally required for a single vehicle rated over 26,000 pounds GVWR. An F-650 ordered at 26,000 pounds sits right at the threshold; at 29,000 pounds it is over it, and every F-750 is over it. The F-600 tops out at 22,000 pounds, which is why it is often spec'd as the largest non-CDL work truck. Confirm licensing with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for your build and use.
How do I know if the truck can carry my body and my load?
Add the body weight, any permanently mounted equipment, your crew and your heaviest cargo load. That total has to stay under the chassis's maximum payload. Ford's typical body weights run from 1,155 pounds for an 8-foot utility body to 4,005 pounds for a 26-foot stake. The payload check in the tool does the math and flags any configuration with less than 500 pounds of headroom.
What is the difference between SRW and DRW on a work truck?
SRW is single rear wheel, DRW is dual rear wheel. Duals raise the rear axle rating and therefore GVWR and payload, and they widen the track for a more stable body platform. On an F-350 chassis cab, moving from SRW to DRW takes maximum GVWR from 10,500 to 11,500 pounds up to a flat 14,000 pounds, and maximum payload from 4,120 to 4,970 pounds up to 6,280 to 7,940 pounds.
Which Ford chassis do I need for a dump body?
Ford lists dump bodies on the F-350 through F-750, always on a dual-rear-wheel chassis, and only in 8, 9 and 10-foot lengths. An 8-foot dump goes on 145/60, 168/60 or 180/60. A 9-foot dump adds 182/72 and the medium duty wheelbases from 158/84 up. A 10-foot dump starts at 158/84 and runs to 212/102. Contractor dumps most often land on an F-550 or F-600 at 169/84, pairing an 18,000 to 22,000 pound GVWR with a 10-foot body.
What is the difference between a chassis cab and a stripped chassis?
A chassis cab arrives with a finished cab and bare frame rails behind it — that is what stake, dump, van, service and catering bodies mount to. A stripped chassis such as the E-350, E-450 or F-59 has no cab at all; the walk-in body forms the cab and the cargo area as one unit. Step vans and route delivery trucks are built on stripped chassis.
Does the model year matter on the Ford Body Application Guide?
Ford reissues the Body Application Guide each model year, but the parts that drive body matching stay consistent. Wheelbase, cab-to-axle and after-frame figures carry forward across Super Duty and Medium Duty. GVWR packages and payload figures are the numbers most likely to move year to year, so confirm those against the build for the model year you are ordering.
Why do some Ford chassis cabs show two GVWR numbers?
Several Super Duty chassis cabs offer an optional GVWR package. Usually it raises the legal loaded weight and the payload with it. On the F-450 the optional 15,000 pound package is lower than the 16,500 pound standard — that is a de-rate used to keep the truck under a registration or licensing threshold. Both figures are shown so you can see the trade.
Can a medium duty wheelbase be shortened for my body?
Yes. Medium duty stock units are commonly shortened to a desired wheelbase as part of the upfit process, so a chassis on the ground can often be adapted rather than ordered and waited for. Tell us the cab-to-axle your body needs and we will check what is already in stock against what would have to be built.
What is a Ford body code and where do I use it?
The body code is the three-character order code that identifies an exact cab, drive and wheel configuration — F3G is an F-350 chassis cab, regular cab, dual rear wheel, 4x2. Giving your dealer the body code plus the wheelbase and cab-to-axle removes the guesswork from ordering. Every result in the matcher shows its body code.
Can Tom's Ford ship a commercial truck to another state?
Yes. We build and deliver completed commercial trucks to any state in the continental US. You spec the chassis, we order it and coordinate the body through Ford-authorized upfitters, and the finished truck is transported to your yard. Transport cost depends on distance and carrier type, and titling and registration follow your home state's rules — we walk through those before anything is ordered.
Why isn't there a snow plow option in the body application guide?
Because a plow is not a body. Ford's Body Application Guide matches bodies to chassis by cab-to-axle, the distance from the back of the cab to the rear axle. A plow mounts to the front bumper and has no cab-to-axle dimension, so it never appears in the body charts. Plow capability is governed by front Gross Axle Weight Rating and the Snow Plow Prep Package, which live in the order guide instead.
What do I need to spec a Ford truck for a snow plow?
Three things beyond the body. Front GAWR has to carry the plow, which is a separate limit from GVWR. The mounted plow and hardware count against payload, so enter them as added equipment in the payload check. And Ford's Snow Plow Prep Package adds plow-rated front springs, a heavier alternator and a supplemental cab heater on diesels — it is prep only and does not include the plow. Your plow manufacturer's vehicle-fit list is what finally approves a plow on a specific truck.
Can Tom's Ford handle the upfit, or just sell the chassis?
Both. We order the chassis to the right build code and coordinate the body through Ford-authorized upfitters, so the truck arrives ready to work. Upfit costs can be rolled into the financing, and Ford accessories installed at time of purchase are covered by the 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. We handle single trucks and multi-unit fleet orders across Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean County.
Fleet managers, owner-operators, and anyone who has to get the order right the first time
Spec'ing a work truck backward from the body is the part most buyers get handed as a PDF and left to figure out. If you run trucks — one or a hundred — this is the reference we use on our own commercial desk, opened up so you can use it too.
We work with HVAC and plumbing contractors, electricians, landscapers and tree services, general contractors and excavators, towing and recovery operators, food and beverage distribution, moving companies, propane and fuel delivery, and municipal and utility fleets — across Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean County, from Keyport, Hazlet, Holmdel and Middletown to Old Bridge, Freehold, Wall, West Long Branch, Brick and Toms River — and shipped to businesses throughout the continental US.
Running more than one truck?
- Spec once, order many. Lock a configuration here and we'll quote it as a repeatable fleet build.
- Ford Pro FIN eligibility. A Fleet Identification Number can unlock concessions on qualifying volume.
- Upfit coordinated. Chassis and body ordered together through Ford-authorized upfitters, financed as one unit.
- Stock check first. Medium duty wheelbases can often be shortened, so a truck on the ground may beat a factory order.
- Delivered anywhere in the lower 48. Out-of-state fleets get the same build and the same desk, trucked to your yard.
Bring us the spec and we'll price the truck.
Copy the build off any result card and send it over — series, cab, wheelbase and CA — and our commercial desk comes back with availability, upfit options and a real number. Single trucks or full fleets, delivered anywhere in the continental US. Family-owned in Keyport since 1962.
