Ford's own guidance is not to drive with this light on and to contact a dealer as soon as possible. If it feels normal, a short, gentle drive straight to a shop is the most it should do. Free pickup within 20 miles saves the drive.

    Short Answer

The amber wrench on a Ford is the powertrain fault light. Ford says it comes on when the vehicle detects a fault in the powertrain or in the four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive system. Ford does not recommend driving while it is lit and says to contact a Ford dealer as soon as possible. It often shows up with a "Powertrain Malfunction" or "Reduced Power" message, because the engine computer cuts power to protect the drivetrain. The fix depends on the fault code stored in the computer, so the first step is having that code read.

    What to Do Right Now

    1. Get to a safe spot. If power drops, ease off the highway with your hazards on. If a red temperature or oil light comes on too, stop and shut the engine off.
    2. Take a photo of the dash. Get the wrench, any other lights and the message. Note what you felt: lost power, rough shifting, a noise.
    3. Don't count on a restart. Turning it off and on may bring power back for a while, but the fault stays stored and usually comes back.
    4. Leave the code for the tech. Clearing it with a parts-store scanner erases the snapshot data that shows what the engine was doing when it happened.
    5. Check for recalls. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or ask us to check open recalls and Ford programs when you book.

    Model Notes

Two known throttle body issues tied to the wrench light. Your VIN decides whether either applies.

2009 to 2013 Escape and Fusion

With the 2.5L or 3.0L engine, a worn electronic throttle body motor could set the wrench light and drop the engine into a low-power mode. Ford released a software update and a Customer Satisfaction Program (13N03) that extended throttle body coverage. Those eligibility windows have since closed for most vehicles, so ask us to check your VIN.

    2015 to 2016 F-150, Edge and others

Ford issued a service bulletin for intermittent power loss and a lit wrench on some 2015 to 2016 F-150 and Edge, and 2016 Expedition, Explorer, Escape, Fusion and Mustang gas models built through May 2016. Techs check throttle body wiring, intake piping and the throttle plate first, then replace the throttle body if needed.

    Ford Wrench Light: FAQs

What does the wrench light mean on a Ford?

It's the powertrain fault light. Ford says it comes on when the vehicle detects a fault in the powertrain or the four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive system.

Can I drive with the wrench light on?

Ford does not recommend driving with it on and says to contact a dealer as soon as possible. If the vehicle has lost power, get to a safe spot and have it towed or picked up. We offer free pickup within 20 miles of Keyport.

What's the difference between the wrench light and the check engine light?

The wrench covers powertrain and 4WD/AWD faults. The check engine light means the on-board diagnostics system found an error, often emissions related. A flashing check engine light means a possible misfire, and Ford warns that driving on may reduce power or stop the engine.

Why did my Ford lose power when the wrench came on?

When the computer sees a fault it can't work around, it limits engine power and speed to protect the engine and transmission. On some models a failing electronic throttle body was a common cause.

Will the wrench light go off by itself?

It can go off if the fault stops happening, but the code usually stays stored. If it comes back, the fault is still there. Have the code read either way.

Can a weak battery cause the wrench light?

Low voltage can set fault codes in the powertrain computer, so we test the battery and charging system before chasing other parts.

Will Tom's Ford work on a Ford I didn't buy there?

Yes. We service any Ford, wherever you bought it, with Ford-certified techs and genuine Ford parts.
