How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car

Are you thinking about making the upgrade to an EV? Then you’re more than likely asking, “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” It varies depending on the make, model, and charging method, but Ford electric vehicles have some of the fastest electric car charging times on the market! Below, we have highlighted the different types of EV charging, along with their average electric car charging times.

Electric Vehicle Charging Methods

Before we dive into electric car charging times, you’ll first need to get an idea of the different types of EV charging: domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging.

Domestic Home Charging
Also known as Level 1 Charging, here’s what you should know about domestic outlet home charging:

Domestic home charging uses a grounded three-prong outlet.
It typically takes 24 hours or more to reach a full charge.
Many Middletown drivers use Level 1 charging to top off the charge they used commuting to work, running errands, etc.
Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging
Those looking for faster electric car charging times at home will want to consider Level 2 Charging, which is usually professionally installed. Just be aware of the following:

Instead of using a grounded household outlet, you will use a rapid charging (240V+) station that is, in most cases, made for your vehicle’s specific brand.
Rather than taking days to reach a full charge, Level 2 charging only takes hours, making it great for overnight use.
You’ll need to do some prepwork before having an electric vehicle charging station installed.
Public Charging
You also have the option for on-the-go EV charging. As time goes on, more and more public charging stations are becoming available at hotels, parking garages, big-name stores, and even apartment complexes in the Hazlet area. Here’s more information on that:

Public charging stations offer different types of EV charging, so electric vehicle charging times will vary.
Some public charging stations offer Level 3 Charging, also known as DC (direct current) fast charging, rather than AC (alternating current) charging. If your vehicle supports DC charging, you could achieve an 80% charge in only 30 to 40 minutes.
Some public charging stations offer electricity derived from renewable resources, such as wind turbines and solar panels, allowing you to enjoy emissions-free charging.
Average Electric Car Charging Times
So, how long does it take to charge an electric car? As we previously mentioned, electric car charging times depend on what type of charger you’re using, as well as your specific make and model. Here are general electric car charging times for each type of EV charging method:

  • Level 1 EV charging: Multiple days to reach a full charge.
  • Level 2 EV charging: Multiple hours/overnight to reach a full charge.
  • Level 3 EV charging: One hour or less to reach a full charge, with the ability to provide substantial range in only ten minutes.
