How to Check Transmission Fluid Step-by-Step

If you’re wondering how to check transmission fluid, just follow these simple steps below:

  1. Your engine should be warmed up first before checking the transmission fluid level, so turn the engine on for a few minutes before moving on to the next steps.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. It is typically found to the right of the oil dipstick for front-wheel drive cars. If you’re having trouble finding it, check your owner’s manual.
  3. Take out the dipstick and touch the fluid. Move it around between your thumb and forefinger to examine the transmission fluid color. It should be nearly clear with a pink hue to it. If you notice it has a burnt smell or looks dirty, visit your local service center to have your transmission fluid replaced.
  4. Before inserting the dipstick back into the vehicle, wipe it off with a rag. Pull it out again to check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking and you need to add more, use a funnel to bring the fluid up to the correct level – just make sure not to overfill it.
