How much can a Ford F-350 tow?
The numbers people actually search for, taken from the same Ford tables the tool runs on. Model year 2026 unless noted; 2027 ratings are identical for the engines Ford kept.
What is the F-350's maximum towing capacity?
Single rear wheel: 25,000 lb conventional (Crew Cab 4x4, 6.7L High Output diesel, 3.55 axle, 35,200-lb GCWR) and 27,600 lb gooseneck (Regular Cab 4x4 with all-terrain tires). Dual rear wheel: 28,000 lb conventional, 35,000 lb 5th-wheel and 38,000 lb gooseneck with the High Output diesel and 4.10 axle (45,600-lb GCWR).
How much does an F-350 tow with the 7.3L gas V8?
Up to 19,500 lb conventional and 22,400 lb gooseneck on a single-rear-wheel F-350 with the 4.30 axle (29,000-lb GCWR). The dually 7.3L is rated 22,000 lb conventional and 22,500 lb gooseneck. Most 7.3L configurations with the 3.73 axle land at 18,000–18,600 lb.
F-250 vs F-350: how much more does the F-350 tow?
Same cab, same diesel: an F-250 tops out at 22,000 lb conventional and 23,000 lb gooseneck (with the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package). An F-350 SRW adds about 3,000 lb conventional and 4,600 lb gooseneck. Above ~23,000 lb the answer is F-350 SRW; above ~27,000 lb it's the dually.
What is the F-350's payload?
Ford's published maximum is 8,000 lb for a 2026 F-350 DRW with the 6.8L gas V8 and the Heavy Duty Payload Package (7,900 lb for 2027 with the 7.3L). F-350 SRW GVWRs run 10,100–12,400 lb; every dually is 14,000 lb. Real payload is GVWR minus that specific truck's curb weight — the door label has it.
What changes for 2027?
Ford dropped the 6.8L gas V8 and the standard-output 6.7L diesel. The 7.3L V8 is now the standard engine (420 hp / 445 lb-ft, down from 430 / 485) and the 500-hp, 1,200 lb-ft High Output diesel is the only diesel. Towing maximums are unchanged: 22,000 / 25,000 / 28,000 / 30,000 lb conventional for F-250 / F-350 SRW / F-350 DRW / F-450 and 40,000 lb gooseneck on the F-450.
What can an F-450 tow?
30,000 lb conventional (Crew Cab, 4.30 axle, 43,500-lb GCWR), 35,000 lb 5th-wheel and 40,000 lb gooseneck with the 40K Gooseneck Tow Package (48,000-lb GCWR, Regular Cab 4x2, High Output diesel). The F-450 pickup gets a 3-inch receiver rated to 30,000 lb.
Which Super Duty engine tows the most?
Four engines for 2026, two for 2027. Every pickup and chassis cab uses the 10-speed TorqShift automatic; chassis cabs add a live-drive PTO provision on the 7.3L and 6.7L.
F-250 to F-750: which class do I need?
Pickups are rated by maximum loaded trailer weight. Chassis cabs are rated the same way but ship with no factory receiver — the body builder installs the hitch. F-650 and F-750 are rated by GCWR: what they tow is the GCWR minus the loaded truck.
6/7F-650 and F-750: how medium-duty towing is rated
Ford does not publish a hitch rating for the F-650 and F-750. The number that governs is the Gross Combined Weight Rating: 50,000 lb with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and 37,000 lb with the 7.3L V8 gas. GVWR runs 22,000–29,000 lb on the F-650 and 25,999–37,000 lb on the F-750 (straight frame). Subtract the truck's actual loaded weight from the GCWR and that is the trailer you can pull — a 26,000-lb loaded F-750 diesel leaves 24,000 lb for the trailer.
Engines: 7.3L V8 gas at 335 hp / 468 lb-ft with the TorqShift HD 6-speed; 6.7L Power Stroke diesel in 270 hp / 800 lb-ft, 300 / 825 or 330 / 850 ratings with the TorqShift HD 10-speed and standard live-drive PTO. 29 clean cab-to-axle lengths from 84 to 207 inches. Air brakes bring adaptive cruise; hydraulic-brake models get Hill Start Assist standard. Both model years carry the same ratings.
Bodies for these are matched in our Ford Body Application Guide Tool, which carries GVWR and payload for every F-350 through F-750 chassis configuration.
The rules the ratings depend on
Factory hitch receiver capacity (pickups)
| Model | Max trailer | Max tongue |
|---|---|---|
| F-250 | 22,000 | 2,200 |
| F-350 SRW | 25,000 | 2,500 |
| F-250 / F-350 Tremor | 18,200 | 1,820 |
| F-350 DRW | 28,000 | 2,800 |
| F-450 DRW | 30,000 | 3,000 |
Same figures weight-carrying or weight-distributing. A 2.5-inch receiver is standard; the F-350 DRW Crew Cab H.O. diesel with 4.10 axle and the F-450 Crew Cab get a 3-inch receiver. That's why a Tremor stops at 18,200 lb no matter the engine.
Tongue and pin weight
Conventional: tongue weight about 10% of the loaded trailer. 5th-wheel and gooseneck: 15% pin weight (real-world RVs often run 20–25%). That weight, plus everyone and everything in the truck, comes out of payload and must not push the rear axle past its GAWR. With a weight-distributing hitch Ford recommends 50% front axle load restoration.
GVWR, GCWR and GAWR
GVWR is the most the truck may weigh loaded, trailer tongue included. GCWR is the most truck and trailer may weigh together — the towing tables are built from it, which is why axle ratio moves the rating. GAWR is the per-axle limit. All three are printed on the Safety Compliance Certification Label in the driver's door jamb, along with the axle code.
Frontal area and altitude
Ratings assume a trailer frontal area of no more than 60 sq ft conventional and 75 sq ft 5th-wheel or gooseneck. A tall, flat-fronted box trailer at 60 sq ft can make a truck rated for it feel underpowered on the Parkway — buy the higher rating. Reduce GVW and GCW by 2% per 1,000 ft of elevation.
Rear axle ratio codes
| Ratio | Open | Limited slip | E-locker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.31 | 31 | — | 3H |
| 3.55 | 35 | 3K | 3J |
| 3.73 | 37 | 3L | 3E |
| 4.10 | — | 4N | — |
| 4.30 | — | 4L | 4M |
| 4.88 (chassis cab) | 48 | 8L | — |
Under the barcode on the door label you'll see AXLE and a two-digit code. Match it here to know which row of the towing table is your truck.
Required packages
F-250: conventional towing over 18,200 lb requires the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package (535) with 18-inch all-season or 20-inch all-terrain tires. F-450 pickup: 40,000 lb gooseneck requires the 40K Gooseneck Tow Package (535). F-450 / F-550 chassis cab: 39,000 / 43,000-lb GCWR requires the Trailer Tow Package – High Capacity (535). Towing above the base rating without the package can void the warranty.
Super Duty towing, sorted in person at Tom's Ford
Tom's Ford has been family-owned in Keyport since 1962 and has won 28 Ford President's Awards for customer service. We are 30 seconds off Garden State Parkway exit 117 on Route 35 South, which makes us the Super Duty stop for boat owners in the Bayshore, horse farms in Colts Neck and Holmdel, contractors from Middletown to Toms River, and 5th-wheel owners staging for the Shore campgrounds.
What we do that a website can't: weigh your trailer at a local scale if you don't know the loaded number, read the door label of the actual truck against it, and spec the hitch, integrated brake controller and 5th-wheel prep at the same time. Commercial buyers get the same treatment through our commercial department, which also matches bodies to chassis cabs and F-650/F-750s.

Super Duty towing questions, answered plainly
Is the towing rating the same for weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches?
Yes. Ford publishes one maximum loaded trailer weight per configuration and it applies to both. A weight-distributing hitch helps handling and restores front-axle load; it does not raise the rating.
Why does the same F-350 show different ratings?
Because the rating follows the driveline, not just the badge. Axle ratio sets the GCWR, and cab, wheelbase, box length, 4x2 vs 4x4 and tire package all change curb weight. A Crew Cab 4x4 176-inch 6.7L High Output F-350 with the 3.55 axle is rated 23,500 lb conventional with base tires and 25,000 lb with 18-inch all-season or all-terrain tires. The tool shows every variant Ford prints, with its footnote.
Can a single-rear-wheel F-350 tow a 5th-wheel camper?
Most 5th-wheel campers, yes. SRW F-350 diesels are rated 20,000–27,400 lb 5th-wheel depending on cab, axle and tires. The limit is usually pin weight, not the rating: a 16,000-lb 5th-wheel puts roughly 3,200 lb on the truck, which is most of an SRW's payload. Above about 15,000 lb of camper, the dually's 14,000-lb GVWR is the safer spec.
Do the 2027 ratings differ from 2026?
For the 7.3L gas and the High Output diesel, the maximums are the same. What changed is availability: the 6.8L gas and the standard-output 6.7L diesel are gone for 2027, so a 2027 gas Super Duty is always the 7.3L and a 2027 diesel is always the 500-hp High Output. The 7.3L's output moved to 420 hp / 445 lb-ft for 2027 emissions compliance; Ford's published tow ratings for it did not drop. The tool carries both model years from Ford's separate 2026 and 2027 towing guides.
Where do these numbers come from?
Ford publishes towing information as PDF guides: the 2026 and 2027 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guides, the 2026 and 2027 Super Duty Chassis Cab Towing Guides, and the 2026 RV & Trailer Towing Guide (F-650/F-750 section). This page is that data made searchable — every figure carries its source page and Ford's own footnotes. Engine output and F-650/F-750 details are from Ford and Ford Pro's published specifications. Two source quirks are kept as printed rather than corrected: Ford lists the 7.3L Tremor's 28,600-lb GCWR row under the 4.30 axle on the conventional page and under 3.73 on the 5th-wheel page, and the 2026 standard-output diesel's 31,200-lb Tremor row appears on the conventional page only.
Does towing capacity change with 4x2 vs 4x4?
Usually by a few hundred pounds, because 4x4 adds curb weight and the GCWR is fixed. A 2026 F-250 SuperCab diesel with the 3.31 axle is 16,200 lb in 4x2 and 15,900 lb in 4x4 at the 23,500-lb GCWR — and both go to 19,500 / 20,000 lb with the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package. Occasionally the 4x4 is rated higher because it carries different standard tires; the tables show it either way.
Can Tom's Ford install the hitch and brake controller?
Yes. Pickups come with the receiver, 7-pin connector and, on most trims, the integrated Trailer Brake Controller; we add 5th-wheel/gooseneck prep, ball hitches and aftermarket 5th-wheel hitches through parts and service. Chassis cabs get their hitch from the body upfitter, which we coordinate.
