How to Reset Ford SYNC & Fix the Ford App When It Won't Connect
There are two different fixes here, so start with the right one. For a frozen or glitchy SYNC screen, do a system reset — it reboots in seconds and keeps all your data. A master reset wipes SYNC back to factory (you'll re-pair your phone and re-link the Ford app), for when you're selling or nothing else works. And if the Ford app won't connect, the fix is usually the car's connectivity settings or activation — not the app. All three are below.
SYNC system reset (keeps your data — try this first)
A system reset reboots SYNC without erasing anything — paired phones, favorites, and settings all stay.
- Put the vehicle in Park, engine running.
- With a Power button: hold the Power button (center of the volume knob) and Seek-Right together ~10 seconds. No Power button: hold Volume-Down and Seek-Right on the steering wheel ~10 seconds.
- The screen goes black and reboots. (On some systems, pressing the audio Power button five times quickly also works.)
SYNC master reset (factory reset — erases everything)
Use this before selling, after buying a used Ford, or when a system reset doesn't fix it. It erases paired phones, call history, texts, navigation favorites, personal keypad codes, and the modem/app activation.
- Vehicle parked and running, in a safe, ventilated spot.
- On the SYNC screen, tap Settings → General → Master Reset and confirm.
- The screen reboots (a few minutes). Afterward, re-pair your phone and re-activate the Ford app.
System reset vs master reset
| Reset | What it does | You keep / lose |
|---|---|---|
| System (soft) | Reboots SYNC | Keeps all data & settings |
| Master (factory) | Wipes to factory defaults | Erases phones, favorites, keypad codes, app activation |
Try the system reset first — only use a master reset when you need a full wipe.
The Ford app won't connect — work through this
Most "won't connect" problems (you may still know it as FordPass) are the car's connectivity settings or activation, not the app. In order:
- Activate the vehicle. In the Ford app: Home → Activate Vehicle. Start the car, leave it in Park and running, accept the activation pop-up on the SYNC screen, then swipe down to refresh — remote commands should appear.
- Check the in-car connectivity settings. On SYNC: Settings → Connectivity (or FordPass Connect) → Connectivity Settings and make sure the toggles are on. A common fix: turn the Connected Vehicle Features off, then back on.
- Confirm the basics. The VIN in the app matches your vehicle, and your connected-services subscription is active.
- Re-pair from scratch. Remove the vehicle from the app, reinstall the app, restart your phone, then re-add the vehicle (scan the VIN in the driver's door jamb) and accept the SYNC pop-up.
- Reset SYNC. Try a system reset; if needed, a master reset — then re-activate.
When it's a shop job
If the screen stays black after resets, the app still won't activate, or a "connected services unavailable" message won't clear, the modem (TCU) may need re-provisioning or there may be a software update / TSB for your model — dealer-tool work. Our team can run the update, re-provision or replace the modem or the SYNC module (APIM), and set up the Ford app — backed by our 3-Hour Diagnosis Guarantee, with free pickup and delivery within 20 miles of Keyport.
Ford SYNC & the Ford App — FAQs
Common questions
How do I reset Ford SYNC?
For a quick reboot that keeps your data, hold the Power button (or Volume-Down) and Seek-Right for about 10 seconds with the car running. For a full wipe, use Settings → General → Master Reset.
What's the difference between a system reset and a master reset?
A system reset just reboots SYNC and keeps everything; a master reset erases all your data and returns it to factory settings.
Will a master reset delete my settings?
Yes — paired phones, navigation favorites, personal keypad codes, and your Ford app activation are all erased, so you'll set those up again.
Why won't the Ford app (FordPass) connect to my vehicle?
Usually the vehicle isn't activated or the in-car connectivity settings are off. Activate the vehicle in the Ford app, accept the SYNC pop-up, and make sure the connectivity toggles are on.
How do I activate my vehicle in the Ford app?
Open the Ford app, tap Activate Vehicle, start the car in Park, accept the activation pop-up on the SYNC screen, then refresh the app.
People also ask
Is FordPass the same as the Ford app?
Yes — Ford renamed the FordPass app to the Ford app in late 2025. Same app and steps; your in-vehicle modem may still show as FordPass Connect.
Where is the SYNC Power button?
It's usually the center of the volume knob on the dash.
Do I need to reset SYNC before selling my Ford?
Yes — a master reset clears your phones, favorites, and personal keypad codes so the next owner starts fresh.
Do I need Wi-Fi for the Ford app to work?
No — it works over the vehicle's built-in cellular modem, not your home Wi-Fi.
The screen is black and won't reset — what now?
That can be a failed SYNC module (APIM) and usually needs dealer diagnosis and programming.
