How to Reset the Oil Change Light on a Ford
After an oil change, your Ford's "Oil Change Required" or "Change Engine Oil Soon" message won't clear on its own — you reset it. There are two ways: the steering-wheel menu (most Fords from the last decade) or the universal pedal method (older models and a reliable fallback). Only reset it after the oil is actually changed — the system tracks real oil life, so resetting early hides a real service need.
Method 1 — Steering-wheel menu (most 2013+ Fords)
- Turn the ignition to ON, engine off (push-button start: press Start once without the brake).
- Use the steering-wheel controls to open the cluster menu and go to Settings → Vehicle (or Vehicle Maintenance) → Oil Life.
- Press and hold OK until the display reads "Reset Successful" and oil life shows 100%.
- Turn the ignition off, then back on to confirm the message is gone.
On F-150s and Explorers with the large SYNC 4 touchscreen, the reset lives in the cluster menu via the steering wheel, or under Settings → Vehicle Maintenance → Oil Life on the screen — not in the main infotainment apps.
Method 2 — Pedal method (older models / fallback)
- Ignition ON, engine off (push-button: hold Start ~2 seconds without the brake — do not start the engine).
- Press and hold both the accelerator and brake pedals, fully, at the same time.
- After ~3 seconds you'll see "Oil reset in progress," and after ~25 seconds "Oil reset complete."
- Release both pedals.
Which method does my Ford use?
| Model / setup | Reset method |
|---|---|
| Most 2013+ F-150, Explorer, Escape, Edge | Settings → Vehicle / Vehicle Maintenance → Oil Life → hold OK |
| Older models (~2008–2012) | Pedal method (accelerator + brake) |
| Base trims with dash buttons (Setup / Info / Reset) | Use the dash Reset button at the Oil Life display |
| SYNC 4 touchscreen trucks | Cluster menu via steering wheel (not the infotainment apps) |
If your menu doesn't list "Oil Life," the pedal method works on most Fords built after 2011. Confirm wording in your owner's manual.
If the light won't reset — or comes back
If the reset won't take, make sure the ignition is ON (not started) and you're holding the right control long enough. If the light returns right away or shows up with a wrench or check-engine icon, that's not a simple reset — there may be a fault code. Bring it in; we'll scan it, change the oil right (Motorcraft or Ford-spec synthetic), and reset it for you. See our current oil-change pricing on Dare2Compare. Ford Oil Change Light — FAQs
Common questions
How do I reset the oil change light on my Ford?
Turn the ignition on (engine off), then either use the steering-wheel menu (Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life → hold OK) or press and hold both pedals until "reset complete" appears.
Do I have to reset it after every oil change?
Yes. The light won't clear on its own, and the system needs the reset to track oil life accurately from a fresh start.
Should I reset it if I haven't changed the oil?
No. Resetting early tells the system the oil is fresh when it isn't, which can lead to running old oil and engine wear.
Where is "Oil Life" in the menu?
Usually Settings → Vehicle (or Vehicle Maintenance) → Oil Life, navigated with the steering-wheel controls.
The reset won't work — what now?
Confirm the ignition is on but the engine isn't started, and you're holding the control long enough. If it still won't reset, use the pedal method or have us reset it.
People also ask
How often should I change the oil in a Ford?
Generally every 7,500–10,000 miles or once a year, but follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor and your owner's manual.
What's the pedal method?
Ignition on, engine off, then hold both the accelerator and brake fully until the reset message completes (about 25 seconds).
Does the SYNC touchscreen reset the oil life?
No — on SYNC 4 trucks the oil-life reset is in the cluster menu via the steering wheel, not the main infotainment apps.
Why is the light back the next day?
The reset may not have completed, or another maintenance item is due. A flashing wrench or check-engine icon points to a fault, not just oil life.
What oil does my Ford take?
It depends on the engine — commonly 5W-20 or 5W-30, Motorcraft or Ford-spec synthetic. Check the oil cap or owner's manual.
Will an oil change at a quick-lube reset it?
It should, but some don't. If the message is still on, reset it yourself or bring it to us.
Does resetting affect my warranty?
No — but skipping oil changes or running past the interval can. Keep records of your services.
Rather we handle it? We'll change the oil right and reset the light.
