How to Start a Ford with a Dead Key Fob Battery

A dead key-fob battery won't strand you — every Ford with push-button start has a backup. Pull the hidden mechanical key out of the fob to unlock the door, then place the fob in your model's backup start location and press the Start button with your foot on the brake. Here's where that spot is on each Ford, and how to quiet the alarm if it trips.

Start with a dead fob

  1. Get into the car. Slide the release latch on the fob, pull out the hidden mechanical key, and unlock the driver's door. The alarm may sound — that's normal, and the next step shuts it off.
  2. Place the fob in the backup slot. Set it in your model's backup start location (see the table below).
  3. Press Start with the brake. With your foot on the brake, press Start/Stop — it may take two presses. Starting with the fob in the slot also silences the alarm.

Buttons usually face out or toward the rear; if it doesn't start, flip the fob and try again. Always confirm the exact spot in your owner's manual. Once the engine's running, you can take the fob back out.

Replace the fob battery

Most recent Ford fobs use a CR2032 coin cell; some use CR2450 or CR2025 — check the number on the old battery before buying. Pop the fob open at the seam, swap the cell (match the + orientation), and snap it shut. Replacing the battery does not erase your key programming.

Dead Key Fob — FAQs

Common questions

Where is the backup start slot on my Ford?

It varies by model — commonly the cupholder (F-150), the center console (Escape, Edge, older Explorer), or under a flip-up seat on bench-seat trucks. See the model table above.

Why did my alarm go off when I used the key?

That's normal when you unlock with the mechanical key. Put the fob in the backup slot and press Start to authenticate and silence it.

What battery does my Ford key fob take?

Usually a CR2032; some use CR2450 or CR2025. Check the number printed on the old battery before you buy.

Will a new fob battery erase my key programming?

No. Swapping the coin cell doesn't affect pairing.

Can I just touch the fob to the Start button?

On some brands, yes — but most Fords need the fob placed in the dedicated backup slot to start.

People also ask

How do I get the mechanical key out of the fob?

Slide the small release latch on the fob; the key pulls straight out.

My truck has a bench seat and no console — where's the slot?

Under the center flip-up seat, in the storage bin.

Does this work on the Mach-E or an EV?

Yes — the slot is at the front of the console, or you can enter your passcode on the touchscreen or use Phone As A Key.

How long does a Ford fob battery last?

Typically two to three years.

The fob still won't work with a new battery — now what?

Check the battery orientation and contacts and try a second new battery. If it's still dead, the fob may need replacing and reprogramming — a dealer can handle that.

Can I remove the fob from the slot after it starts?

Yes. Once the engine is running, take the fob back out.

Will the car keep running once I'm driving?

Yes. The backup slot is only needed to start; the fob can be anywhere in the cabin while you drive.
